Otherlands Trio Workshop

North Star Jazz presents a special workshop with Otherlands Trio, featuring Stephan Crump on acoustic bass, Darius Jones on alto saxophone, and Eric McPherson on drums.

This workshop will focus on the trio’s approach to making music together: spontaneous composition, ensemble connection, rhythmic development, thematic development, and structural development.

Through discussion and demonstration, the members of Otherlands Trio will share their philosophies and processes for building music in real time. One idea they will explore is “concentric orbiting,” a way of creating magnetism and groove while staying open, flexible, and responsive as a piece continues to take shape.

The workshop is open to musicians, listeners, students, and anyone interested in creative music, improvisation, and the inner workings of a highly interactive ensemble. Questions are welcome throughout.

This event also celebrates the arrival of Star Mountain, the debut album from Otherlands Trio, released on Intakt Records. The trio brings together three major voices in contemporary creative music: Grammy-nominated bassist and composer Stephan Crump, acclaimed alto saxophonist and composer Darius Jones, and drummer Eric McPherson. Their debut album Star Mountain was released October 17, 2025 on Intakt Records.
