Rackham StageGenres: Latin Music, Salsa
Originally formed in Michigan in the ’70s by Cuban bandleader Mike Eyia, Orquesta Ritmo specializes in the electrifying genre of Latin music and always draws a big crowd to A2SF. This polished seven-piece currently consists of director, guitarist, arranger, and percussionist Mike Eyia, pianist and arranger Arlene McDaniel, saxophonist Jon Gewirtz, trumpeter Lucas Minor, conga player Xavier Rosario, drummer and timbales player Dr. Jon Weber, bassist Terry Newman, trombonist Pablo Mueller, and Kevin Jones on congas, bongos, and percussion, with vocal duties split across a few of the members. They have performed all over the Midwest and shared the stage with such artists as salsa great Oscar D’León, Latin rockers Los Lobos, and jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon. Recent accomplishments include a special tribute from the Michigan Legislature for promoting Cuban culture in the mid-Michigan area. Don’t miss their fantastically danceable grooves this summer.
