Orientation: West Oakland Metal Shredder Collaborative

Do you live or work in West Oakland? Want to work collaboratively to stop toxic metal shredding pollution? Get involved in the West Oakland Metal Shredder Collaborative!

The collaborative is a group of community members, government agencies, and senior leadership from Radius Recycling working together to address metal recycling emissions. After the devastating toxic fire at Radius Recycling (formerly known as Schnitzer Steel), community members came together with a simple demand: clean up or get out. WOEIP joined an interagency rapid response task force to combat metal shredding pollution, which has evolved into this collaborative.

Through the collaborative, you’ll be able to work directly with the agency staff responsible for curbing pollution and protecting our health. Help make sure government regulators and Radius staff keep West Oakland residents’ health and safety top of mind, and be a part of addressing decades of inequitable pollution in our neighborhood and across the state.

You don't have to be an air pollution expert to join the collaborative: if you live in West Oakland, you have the experience and perspective we need to make sure this collaborative benefits our community. We'll support you to be an effective community advocate.

At this orientation, we’ll tell you everything you need to know to participate in the collaborative.

• We’ll catch you up to speed on what’s happened in the collaborative so far, and how you can participate.
  
• We’ll share an overview of the metal shredding industry and why it generates so much pollution.
  
• We’ll look at best practices and case studies of communities who stood up to negligent polluters, from the victory against Red Star Yeast Factory here in West Oakland to Chicago’s fight against metal shredders.
