Organ Studio Recital: Featuring University of Notre Dame Organ Students and Faculty

University of Notre Dame organ students and faculty will perform an organ recital in collaboration with organ students from Hillsdale College, featuring their two Paul Fritts organs in Christ Chapel. Performers from Notre Dame will be August Berchelmann, Anastasia Hoshaw, David Djambov, Paul Dinan, Millicent Hawthorne, Nick Schefstad and Professor Mary Catherine Levri.
The program will focus on chorale preludes from Georg Friedrich Kauffmann’s Harmonische Seelenlust (1733), a collection of pieces that has become important because Kauffmann gave specific organ registrations for many of the pieces, which give us important information about early 18th century Central German organ registration practice. There is speculation as to how well J. S. Bach knew these pieces and what he would have thought of the registrations. The audience will be invited to sing two Lutheran chorales using Kauffmann’s harmonizations which incorporate an 18th century tradition of Zwischenspiele, little interludes between each phrase.
