DMA student Joseph Balistreri presents “Missa Seca”, his third doctoral recital, on Sunday, April 27 at 8pm in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. A "Missa seca” is an archaic practice of celebrating a Mass without the Eucharistic elements while retaining the ritual and music normally experienced at Mass. Balistreri will present accompanied plainchant and organ music based on plainchant in the order of a Mass as a musical embodiment of his dissertation, “Gregorian Chant at the Keyboard: Accompaniment, theory, and liturgical philosophy in 19th and 20th-century France and Belgium.” He will be joined by serpentist Douglas Yeo and two chant ensembles in presenting historic and newly-composed chant accompaniments, as well as organ music of Tournemire, de Grigny, Reger, Messiaen, Guilmant, and Peeters. This event is free and open to the public.
