📅 Saturday, 16 May 2027

No previous watercolour experience is required. Come ready to experiment, play and discover your own version of ordinary magic.

Description

Magical moments don't always need to be spectacular.

Sometimes they can be found in a flower that glows an unusual colour, a familiar landscape that feels slightly dreamlike, or an everyday object placed somewhere unexpected.

In Ordinary Magic: Watercolour & Imagination, we'll explore how watercolour can move beyond simply painting what we see.

You'll experiment with:

🎨 Unexpected colour — creating palettes that feel imaginative rather than purely realistic
🌿 Atmosphere — using washes, edges and tonal values to create mood
Imagination — adding small details that shift an ordinary scene into something extraordinary
🖌️ Watercolour techniques — exploring washes, layering, blending and controlled spontaneity
💭 Visual storytelling — thinking about what your painting might suggest, rather than explaining everything

The goal isn't to create a technically perfect painting.

It's to loosen up, make creative decisions and discover how a little imagination can transform an ordinary subject.

Think like a designer, but create like an artist.

FAQs
Do I need previous watercolour experience?

No. This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as artists who would like to loosen up and explore a more imaginative approach to watercolour.

What will we paint?

Rather than focusing on one rigid subject, we'll explore how familiar or everyday subjects can be transformed through colour, atmosphere and imagination.

Is this a traditional watercolour class?

Not quite! We'll learn practical watercolour techniques, but the emphasis is on creative interpretation, experimentation and visual storytelling rather than painting a perfectly realistic image.

Do I need to bring my own materials?

No. Materials are included. If you like to use your favourite art supply, a suggested materials list is provided above.

What should I bring?

Bring your curiosity!

Is the workshop suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. Demonstrations and guidance will be provided throughout the session.

What is the Watercolour Mindset?

It's an approach to painting that encourages you to experiment, accept happy accidents, work with the nature of water and focus on progress rather than perfection.

Can I take my painting home?

Yes! You'll leave with your completed artwork and ideas you can continue exploring at home.

What if my painting doesn't look like the demonstration?

That's perfectly okay. Ordinary Magic is about interpretation, not imitation. Your painting can be completely different from the example.

What is the workshop size?

Places are intentionally kept small to allow for individual guidance, conversation and plenty of painting time.

Is this workshop indoors?

Yes, the workshop is held indoors at Melbourne Central Skybridge.

Can I come alone?

Of course! Many participants attend workshops on their own. It's a relaxed and welcoming environment to meet other people who enjoy making art.

Will I get a reminder before the workshop?
Yes — we’ll send you an email reminder with the exact meeting details 2 days before the event.

What if I'm nervous about my painting?

That's exactly why we're here. You don't need to consider yourself "an artist" to experiment with watercolour. Come curious, not perfect.

Come paint the ordinary. Add a little imagination. Find the magic. ✨
