No one flees their homeland for pleasure.
This opera tells the true story of Ali Abdi Omar. To escape the terror ravaging his homeland of Somalia, there is only one way: a trek along the deadly Libyan migration route from the Horn of Africa to the heart of Europe. Along the way, friendships are made despite the hardships and hope is found amid the horror. After a two-year journey, Ali finally arrives at the Brussels-South railway station. The year is 2019. He is 14 years old.
Director Ricard Soler Mallol and percussionist and multimedia artist Grey Filastine processed Ali’s migration journey – illustrative of that of so many who, driven by the courage of despair, cross continents and cultures – into an opera that exposes the geopolitical sore points of today. The libretto was jointly written with the protagonist, while the score relies on song and chamber percussion, wind and string instruments, but also electronica to render the soundscape of each stage in Ali’s journey.

Dans son pays natal, la Somalie, Ali n’a qu’un seul moyen d’échapper à la terreur : emprunter la route migratoire meurtrière qui mène de la Corne de l’Afrique au cœur de l’Europe. Malgré les épreuves, les amitiés qu’il noue au fil de son parcours lui permettent de garder espoir au milieu de la tourmente. Il lui faut deux ans pour arriver à la gare de Bruxelles-Midi. Nous sommes en 2019, Ali a quatorze ans.
Cette épopée est l’histoire vraie d’Ali Abdi Omar, adaptée en opéra en collaboration avec Ali lui-même. Cette œuvre retrace avec émotion toutes les étapes de son voyage. Une expérience sensorielle où musique électronique, voix, instruments à cordes et à vents, percussions et danse rendent un vibrant hommage à la résilience d’un jeune garçon forcé, comme tant d’autres, de quitter sa famille et son foyer pour survivre.

Deze opera vertelt het waargebeurde verhaal van Ali Abdi Omar. Ontsnappen aan de terreur in zijn thuisland Somalië kan maar op één manier: een trek van de Hoorn van Afrika naar het hart van Europa, via de dodelijke Libische migratieroute. Onderweg smeedt hij ondanks de beproevingen vriendschappen en vindt hij hoop te midden van de verschrikkingen. Na twee jaar komt Ali uiteindelijk aan in het station van Brussel-Zuid, helemaal alleen. We schrijven 2019. Hij is dan veertien.
Regisseur Ricard Soler Mallol en percussionist-multimedia-artiest Grey Filastine verwerkten Ali’s migratietocht – illustratief voor zovelen die met de moed der wanhoop continenten en culturen doorkruisen – in een opera die de geopolitieke pijnpunten van vandaag blootlegt. Het libretto werd geschreven samen met de protagonist, terwijl de compositie naast zang en een symfonisch ensemble ook percussie en elektronica inzet om het klanklandschap van elke etappe op deze reis weer te geven.
