Save the date! On Friday the 28th of November at 7 PM, we will open Rememory. Artists: Kenneth Aidoo, Susanne Khalil Yusef, Nazif Lopulissa, Agnes Waruguru and Aimée Zito Lema.
Rememory is a group exhibition featuring works by artists who rewrite forgotten or erased histories and reclaim them through memory. Inspired by Toni Morrison’s concept of rememory — the process of actively retrieving suppressed memories — this exhibition explores how memory can serve as a tool to reinterpret and reshape the past.
With a critical view on dominant narratives and historiography, as well as on historical images and archival materials, the artists Kenneth Aidoo, Susanne Khalil Yusef, Nazif Lopulissa, Agnes Waruguru and Aimée Zito Lema highlight the forgotten aspects of cultural memory. Recurring themes include feelings of displacement and the experience of a cultural in-between space.
Materiality plays a central role in these artists’ work: memories are explored through tangible media such as paper, textiles, dried flowers, water, herbs and other materials imbued with personal and cultural significance. In this way, remembering not only becomes a personal act but also a means of reorganizing the past as an act of resistance, healing and reconnection.
The exhibition Rememory — following the exhibition Unknown Landscapes, which explored the concept of repair — is the second exhibition in a trilogy in which curator Cynthia Jordens investigates how the notion of “transformation” can be imbued with meaning, and how artists express ideas about a society in which transformation is essential.
