In collaboration with gallery Unfold and Kunst Arzt (Kyoto, Japan), Project Space 110 is pleased to present The Conscious Absence: Tracing Emergence—a three-person show by Taiwanese artists Chuang Ho and Wu Pin-Jie, and Japanese artist Miyake Yuki—alongside A Brief Hint, a solo exhibition by Miyake Yuki. These two exhibitions are the culmination of ongoing, transnational dialogues between Taiwan and Japan as reflected across the practices of the artists, the curatorial team, and the collaborating spaces.
The Conscious Absence: Tracing Emergence—an interdisciplinary show presented in our Main Room—weaves together the digital animation art of Chuang Ho, textile sculptures of Wu Pin-Jie, and pastel-based works of Miyake Yuki. Across the geocultural distances between these artists’ practices, the East Asian concepts of 間 (Ma) and 留白 (Liú Bái) play an integral role—emphasizing the active presence of negative space. This concept of an activated void reflects the nature of this transnational curatorial project in which an “essential interval” of physical and psychological space between the individuals and spaces involved leads to the emergence of new, creative possibilities. Amidst this dynamic of collaborative partnerships intertwined with acts of ceding space, Chuang Ho's animation utilises intentional emptiness to engage the audience, Miyake's pastel drawings evoke a visual experience that shifts with viewers’ movements, and Wu Pin-Jie’s indigo dye and cyanotype sculptures display receding traces that travel slowly across her works over the temporal course of the exhibition.
In A Brief Hint, Miyake Yuki presents her solo show in our Back Room—her first international exhibition. In this space, Miyake displays her delicate pastel drawings on the walls, suspended in space, and laid flat on the floor. Creating an environment both tranquil and subtly dynamic, Miyake probes how we see and remember. In response to experiencing the world with poor eyesight, Miyake creates what she calls “landscapes from memory”—ephemeral patterns inspired by nature and memories gathered from everyday life. The shimmering surfaces of Miyake’s drawings shift in tandem with viewers’ movements, changes in light, and modulations of air currents, reflecting the artist’s fascination with how we remember and the feeling of forgetting. In a show that mirrors the fragility of memory, Miyake induces beautiful, fleeting experiences—sensations that require one to actively grasp them, lest they easily escape.
About the Artists
MIYAKE Yuki (born in 1994, Okayama, Japan) is currently based in Kyoto and Osaka. Through distinctive approaches to creation, presentation, and display, Miyake explores ways in which her own memories exist and poses questions about “how we see.” Miyake’s recent exhibitions include lenses of glasses (solo exhibition, KUNST ARTZ, Kyoto, 2025), the 16th Okayama Prefectural Rising Artists Award Exhibition (group exhibition, Tenjinyama Cultural Plaza, Okayama, 2024), and ARTISTS’ FAIR KYOTO (Kyoto National Museum, Meiji Kotokan, 2024). She was awarded the Mainichi Newspapers Co., Ltd. Prize at Kyoto Art for Tomorrow 2024: Emerging Artists Exhibition.
CHUANG Ho (born in 1985, New Taipei City, Taiwan) is an animation artist based in Taipei. His practice centers on extending the qualities of hand-drawn animation, exploring the ascetic labor involved in its production and the emotional accumulation of time and space. He graduated from the Department of Digital Media Design at Asia University in 2009 and earned his Master's degree in New Media Art from National Taipei University of the Arts in 2014. In 2022, his solo exhibition See the Sea was held at Project Seek of Hong Foundation (Taipei, Taiwan), and he was selected to participate in the Tianmei Art Foundation's Taiwan Contemporary Artists Overseas Visit Program No.7 - Venice.Kassel.Berlin. In 2023, he exhibited in Here is where we meet at Chiayi Art Museum (Chiayi, Taiwan), C-LAB Future Media Arts Festival FUTURE VISION LAB 2023 at the Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (Taipei, Taiwan), and the artist residency for the 9th Nakanojo Biennale (Gunma, Japan). In 2024, he developed a new, full-dome projection piece titled Demo:Dome, which has been screened at international festivals in Melbourne, Jena, and Prague.
WU Pin-Jie (born in 1998, Kaohsiung, Taiwan) graduated from Taipei National University of the Arts in 2021 and is currently a graduate student in the Fiber Arts program at the Graduate Institute of Applied Arts, Tainan National University of the Arts. In recent years, Wu’s practice has combined indigo dyeing with cyanotype, employing the opposing effects of saturation and fading to trace the emergence and disappearance of experience and memory. In 2022, she was selected for London Craft Week: Theatre of Color—Taiwan Fiber Craft Exhibition (Gallery@OXO, London). Recent exhibitions include The Vanishing Form・blue afterglow (solo exhibition, ARARAT Art Partners, Taichung, 2025), Among Threads: Three Questions for the Weaver (Shu Lin, Taiwan, 2024), and ReGenerating Tomorrow: Sustainability, Environment and Imagination (O-Bank Art Gallery & Hsinchu City Art Site of Railway Warehouse, Taipei & Hsinchu, 2024).
About the Curators
LEE Chien is an art sociologist. She holds a PhD in Sociology from Goldsmiths, University of London; an MA in Auditory and Visual Cultures from Goldsmiths, University of London; and a BA in Sociology from National Taiwan University. She is currently an adjunct assistant professor in the Department and Graduate Institute of Sociology at National Taiwan University, and a co-founder and researcher of gallery Unfold in Kyoto. Her previous appointments include adjunct assistant professor at National Tsing Hua University, contributing researcher for the academic journal Theory, Culture & Society, and visiting researcher at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her research focuses on museums, aesthetic experience, and photographic media. Drawing on sensory ethnography, she explores the body, its dispositions and habits, and the role of space within these contexts. Her artistic practice adopts site-based performative approaches, rooted in observations of how eating is entangled with sociocultural structures—particularly the act of chewing, which is at once primal and feral, yet tightly embedded within frameworks of ritual and etiquette.
HUANG Mu-Wei holds an MA in Curatorial Studies from the Global Seminar Program at Kyoto University of the Arts, and an MA in Arts Policy and Management from Birkbeck, University of London. She is the director and curator of gallery Unfold, as well as a freelance translator specializing in art and design. Her interests focus on material transformation, spatial perception, and corporeality within visual experience. Recent curatorial and production projects include Reverse Journey: Kyoto at Art Rhizome Kyoto (2024–2025). Her translation work includes Becoming Taiwanese (Chinese-to-Japanese translation; to be published by Akaaka Art Publishing, Japan, in October 2025).

About the Collaborating Spaces
gallery Unfold was founded in 2024 in Kyoto, Japan by Mu-Wei Huang and Chien Lee. gallery Unfold is dedicated to presenting contemporary Asian art—with a particular emphasis on Taiwan—on the international scene through collaboration, exploration, research and curatorial initiatives. By engaging with diverse media and artistic practices while critically examining existing frameworks, the gallery seeks to uncover and articulate the multifaceted nature of Taiwanese contemporary art. At the same time, it collaborates with artists from around the world whose practices engage closely with contemporary contexts, working to interpret, translate, and convey the meaning and essence of art.
