Sanlam in collaboration with the National Museum invites you and your partner to celebrate the opening of the exhibitionSutha Ke Fete: The Art of the Basotho Blanket
in the Reservoir Gallery at Oliewenhuis Art Museum, 16 Harry Smith Street, Bloemfontein on Thursday, 18 September 2025 at 18:00
Sutha ke Fete: an invitation to make way for an imagined passer-by, wrapped in a richly decorated heritage blanket. This saying captures the power and dignity of the blanket as a wearable work of art and a form of communication steeped in history and tradition. The blanket is perhaps one of the most recognisable associations with Basotho culture and history – from its origins in animal skins and karosses, to its 21st-century appearance on fashion runways and in Hollywood blockbusters.
With a selection of blankets acquired on loan from the National Museum in Bloemfontein, sourced from private collections and owned by the Sanlam Art Collection, the exhibition celebrates the aesthetic expression of these iconic blankets.
Opening speaker: Thandeka Nkambule, Chief Transformation Officer, Sanlam Corporate Affairs
