A journey through loss, resilience and hope.
Yindjibarndi artist Melissa Sandy brings The Void home to the Pilbara, presenting a powerful body of work that honours family, Country and the enduring strength of cultural legacy.
The Void is a deeply personal exhibition of large-scale textured canvases and audio-visual works created as Melissa processed the passing of her aunt, acclaimed artist Mrs A. Sandy, who held the role of a mother within Yindjibarndi culture. Through painting, Melissa explores grief, healing and the connections that continue to shape her identity and artistic practice.
Known for her intricate patterning, rich textures and distinctive use of colour, Melissa’s works reflect the landscapes, plants and stories of her Yindjibarndi Country, while offering an intimate insight into her emotions and lived experiences. The exhibition features a collection of solo works alongside a collaborative piece created with close family members, celebrating connection and shared memory.
The exhibition’s audio-visual works and documentary film were developed during a return-to-Country journey to Jirrayi (Mount Florence) on the eastern fringes of Yindjibarndi Country, allowing Melissa and her family to reconnect with their homelands and stories.
Following its acclaimed presentation at PS Art Space during Perth Festival 2026, The Void returns to the Pilbara for its home presentation at the Red Earth Arts Precinct. This moving exhibition invites community members and visitors to experience a story of resilience, connection and the lasting legacy of family, Country and culture.
Join us for the Opening Night on Thursday 9 July at 6pm at The Shelf, Red Earth Arts Precinct.
Presentation Partners: The presentation of THE VOID in Karratha is made possible by The Junction Co. and the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport (CITS), Culture and the Arts WA, as part of the RETB Regional Arts Sector Capacity Building Funding Program (2023–2027).
