About the exhibition
The centerpiece of the exhibition, Egon Schiele’s rarely seen masterpiece Sawmill, features a pile of wood on the verge of collapse. The mill can be seen as a symbol of the empire, which in 1913 was in a precarious state. The exhibition demonstrates two potential outcomes for the timber: a bridge, as in Schiele’s painting, or wooden furniture.
