OPEN FLOOR Saturday Community Dance – Kangaroo Ground
Weekly | Facilitated by Henry Fowkes
“Everything in the universe has rhythm. Everything dances.”
— Maya Angelou
ABOUT
After two years of running as a fortnightly dance, we are shifting to a new weekly rhythm from April 18th.
These Open Floor community dances invite you to express yourself freely through movement in a supportive, welcoming space, followed by connection and a delicious chai after the dance.
Held in the tranquil bushland of Kangaroo Ground, this venue is a short drive from inner-city Melbourne. If you want to make the day of it, you can followup dance with an adventure to the swim in the Yarra River or enjoy the soulful St Andrews Market.
In this dance, we use Open Floor—an enlivening, mindful, free-form movement practice—to come home to our bodies, release what we no longer need, and make space for new possibilities.
No dance experience needed.
No steps to follow.
Newcomers are always welcome.
Please note: this is an adult class; children cannot attend.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Music will already be playing when you arrive to support a gentle, self-guided warm-up. This is time to settle in, tune into your body and senses, and allow movement to unfold naturally.
The facilitator will guide a musical journey that gradually builds—from easeful warm-up into fuller, more energising rhythms—supporting both individual and collective movement.
As the dance deepens, you’ll be invited to explore movement, connection, and expression at your own pace.
Please turn phones off, hold off talking in the dance space, and take responsibility for your own needs throughout the session.

WHAT IS OPEN FLOOR?
“Open Floor is not about learning to dance. It’s about dancing to learn.”
— Sue Rickards
Open Floor Movement Practice is a lively, life-affirming dance inquiry that invites us to track our thoughts, feelings, and habits—and turn them into creative fuel. Grounded in mindfulness and universal movement resources such as breath, grounding, and centring, the practice supports being fully embodied—physically, emotionally, and mentally.
This is a free-form, drug- and alcohol-free movement space. You’re welcome to dance gently or wildly, rest when needed, and connect with yourself and others in your own way.
