*Open call for young Sámi artists and duojárat in the early stages of their artistic practice.*
Deadline: 20.05.26
Open Call: Earálágan/Ovttalágan
What does it mean to be young and Sámi? What does Sámi identity look like where you are – in the city, in rural areas, in digital spaces?
Sápmi stretches across the borders of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, but also across cultural boundaries; boundaries related to language, belonging, recognition and self-understanding.
Some grow up in cities, others in reindeer herding, in coastal Sámi traditions or in small local communities. Some grow up with Sámi as their first language. Others know only a few words. Some have always felt at home in their Sámi identity, while others find their way back to it later in life.
Being young and Sámi is not static, not singular, not fully defined. We are shaped by places, languages, relationships and lived experiences – by what we inherit and what we choose to carry forward. How does your identity take shape in the art you create? What do you want to express in words, form or sound that only you can articulate?
---
We invite young Sámi artists and duojárat in the early stages of their artistic practices to develop a new work for a group exhibition at Kurant Visningsrom in Romsa/Tromsø on November 27, 2026.
Earálágan / Ovttalágan is part of the programme connected to the European Youth Capital 2026. Ten selected participants will receive a grant of 100,000 NOK and take part in a process consisting of two weekend workshops (June and September 2026), where new works will be developed towards the exhibition.
You can apply with all forms of artistic expression – painting, film, performance, sound, duodji, text, installation or something entirely different. We look forward to receiving your application.
