About this Event
This participatory workshop provides an accessible introduction to flamenco movement, rhythm and expression, delivered as part of Hidden Beach (HB). Led by experienced flamenco practitioner Fenella Barker, the session is designed to prioritise participation, learning and inclusion over performance, ensuring it is welcoming to beginners and those with no prior dance experience.
Participants are guided through the foundations of flamenco practice, including posture, simple footwork, rhythmic clapping (palmas), and expressive use of the arms and upper body. Activities are structured in clear, progressive stages, supporting confidence-building, physical coordination and creative awareness at an individual pace.
The workshop introduces flamenco as a cultural art form rooted in community, history and emotional expression. Through guided movement and rhythm, participants develop an understanding of how dance can communicate feeling and story, supporting cultural engagement, wellbeing and creative self-expression.
Delivered in an inclusive, outdoor setting, the session encourages active participation, listening and shared experience. By removing pressure to perform and focusing on embodied learning, the workshop supports positive mental wellbeing, social connection and access to high-quality cultural activity within a public space.
As part of Hidden Beach (HB), the workshop contributes to wider aims around community engagement, cultural participation and access to the arts, creating opportunities for people of different ages and backgrounds to connect through movement, rhythm and shared cultural experience.
