ONGA Chestnut Growing Workshop

Join us for our annual nut-growing workshop with the Ohio Nut Growers Association. Portage SWCD has collaborated with ONGA for the past two decades to offer crop-grade nut tree seedlings in our spring conservation sale. ONGA provides the trees and also supports the annual effort with a spring workshop to provide information about planting and caring for your nut trees.

Our 2025 nut trees will be Hybrid Chestnuts. These seedlings combine pest and pathogen resistance from several chestnut species and can start producing nuts in as little as 3 to 5 years in good site conditions.

Bob Stehli, Wintergreen Tree Farm, and other ONGA members will join us for the March 1st workshop that will provide an update about the chestnut industry in the U.S. Bob will include information about the advancements in plant breeding and propagation and the impacts this is having on the nut growing industry. There will be a tremendous amount of orchard experience within this group of nut growers. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet with commercial nut growers in a relaxed atmosphere where your questions are welcomed! This workshop is suitable for those wishing to sell nuts commercially and for the backyard grower.
