Join us and be transported back to the golden age of Egypt's performing arts - when glamorous Raqs Sharqi ("bellydance") performers shared the stage with supremely skilled traditional musicians, drawing guests into a state of blissful enchantment through their rich and spontaneous interweaving of melody, movement, and shared emotion...
OUR DANCERS
You will be entertained by a glittering array of dance artistes from around the world, each bringing her own feeling and energy to the timeless classics of Egyptian music, played live on stage by our world-class traditional orchestra.
Our guest star is bellydance performer, researcher and historian Nisaa (Heather D Ward) from the USA - known both for her subtle, musically-sensitive, and deeply moving Raqs Sharqi performances, and for her lovingly-researched historical reconstructions of the dances of Egypt's awalim and ghawazee

OUR ORCHESTRA
Led by percussion maestro Reda Henkesh (currently the lead drummer for Egyptian pop superstar Mohammed Mounir) on tabla, and featuring Emad Al Rashidy (vocals & oud), Emile Bassili (violin), ElGamal ElKordy (accordion), Mina Mikhail Salama (ney), and Medhat Al Masry (percussion)
Between them, our musicians have played for many of Cairo's most iconic bellydance stars, from Nagwa Fouad to Soheir Zaki, and have accompanied singers including Wadih el Safi, Ahmed Adaweya, and even played in the orchestra of "the star of the east" Oum Kalthoum herself!
Together, they create a gorgeous multi-layered soundscape - playing by heart and improvising deftly around classic Arab melodies to breathe life, energy, and feeling into every moment.
THE RAQS ROOTS INTENSIVE
This show is a part of a whole weekend of dance workshops and lectures, "Raqs Roots Intensive: Ihsas el-Musiqa", taught jointly by Nisaa (Heather D Ward) from the USA and Reda Henkesh from Cairo, Egypt.
