One Day Voice Workshop for Actors
About this Event
This workshop is led by Edel Fleming, a Speech and Language Therapist with a strong interest in drama, voice and movement. Drawing on her clinical experience, personal exploration of voice for actors and training across therapeutic and performance settings, she brings together practical approaches to voice, movement and performance. Edel’s own experience of vocal difficulties and recovery from surgery has also given her a particular appreciation of vocal health and the relationship between voice, body and movement.
Following the success of the half-day workshop in April, Edel is back to further explore and develop the areas covered then. This session will revisit the practical tools introduced previously, exploring them in greater depth and beginning to apply them more directly to text and performance.
Participants will consider the voice as a physical, expressive and responsive part of the actor, with a focus on the relationship between the nervous system, body and voice and how stress, tension and arousal can influence breath, vocal freedom, resonance and presence. Through practical exercises, they will work with breath, resonance and projection, articulation and diction and with vocal variety and connection, drawing on ideas from Kristin Linklater, Catherine Fitzmaurice and Patsy Rodenburg.
The emphasis is on experimentation, play and developing greater awareness of the individual voice. Actors will leave with practical strategies, including a simple structure for developing their own daily vocal practice.
The workshop is suitable for those who attended the April session, as well as actors who are new to the work.
