This retreat will be dedicated to cultivating equanimity, defined within the early Buddhist teaching of The Four Brahmaviharas.
About this Event

Equanimity, one of the four divine and immeasurable attitudes, is not a superficial attitude. It’s not a mask that one wears on top of tension or grievances, and it's not like floating among the clouds far above worldly concerns. How do those of us who wish to dedicate our heart's work to the welfare of the world stay the course without suppressing afflictions, without hardening, avoidance, overwhelm or burning out? The practice of zazen naturally cultivates the spacious and accommodating psychophysiology of equanimity.
Equanimity has no judgement on our feelings or on those of others. It doesn’t take sides, and it also doesn’t ignore sides. It doesn’t divide, and at the same time it doesn’t deny differences. It is a quality of unobstructed presence that remains intimate with obstructions. It functions as a field of equality, and as the basis for "an appropriate response" to the myriad concerns of our complex and ordinary lives.

This retreat will be led by Nyokai Kristin Diggs. Our day will include periods of sitting and walking meditation, and a Dharma talk. A silent lunch break will be offered, during which indoor and outdoor seating will be available. Please bring your own lunch.

Attendance is available on a sliding scale from $10 to $100. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

If this will be your first extended sitting with us, please send us a note at [email protected] to introduce yourself.
