The great cinematic mythmaker of the San Fernando Valley, Paul Thomas Anderson, stages uniquely American tales of ambition, destiny, downfall, and redemption. His films might, at first glance, appear to deal with the mundane. And yet, there are always hints of the fantastic in his work—happenings and encounters so unlikely, and so seismic, that the only explanation could be a kind of cosmic fate. With his latest film creating a buzz in the wider film world, we thought to delve into PTA’s whimsical, slightly dark-humoured stories this February.
