Join Everwild staff at Lakewood Boat Launch and learn how to identify, monitor, survey, and remove aquatic invasive species (AIS) found in and around Chautauqua Lake.
Chautauqua Lake supports a wide variety of aquatic plants. The lake’s underwater flora includes rare, threatened species as well as a variety of common plants that provide essential habitat for fish and other animals and aid in maintaining water quality. However, it also includes several non-native invasive species that can cause challenges for the lake’s ecology, limit recreational activities, and impact the local economy.
To address this, Everwild Land Trust runs an AIS Early Detection program each summer. Trained staff and dedicated volunteers monitor the lake, survey for invasive species, and remove them when found. Regular on-water classroom sessions are offered to train new volunteers in identifying target species and report sightings through iMapInvasives, helping us increase awareness and improve coverage throughout the busy summer season.
Multiple sessions are planned for the summer. Each session will be hosted at a different location. You are welcome to register for as many sessions as you’d like to learn and assist with AIS monitoring and removal.
Intended Audience: Adults
Price: Free
Registration: Registration is required due to the highly weather dependent nature of these surveys. Registration will close the day before each event.
Special Notes:
Be sure to check your email prior to the event for any urgent updates.
Participants must provide their own kayak or canoe and life jacket.
Please bring anything you may need to stay safe and comfortable on the water. We recommend sun screen, insect repellent, water shoes, a bottle of water, and a snack.
