About this Event

On the Origin of Darwin

Join Daniil Vasiukova, the guest curator of our new exhibition, Darwin and Audubon: A Natural Connection at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, to explore the early days of the great Charles Darwin.

Before Darwin became a great scientist, he was a young man struggling to find his path in life. Spend an evening learning how he got on board the HMS Beagle and embarked on the journey that would change the world.

As we move through Darwin’s earlier years, discover how not to become a doctor and how to survive a medical lecture in nineteenth-century Edinburgh. Find out what exotic animals and insects you should and should not put in your mouth and how a nose shape can influence your career.

The exhibition is on at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow until Friday 21st August 2026. It is a companion to our permanent exhibition, .

As part of your visit to the College, you will get the chance to see our first edition of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species(1859) as well as a newly turned page on one of our first edition volumes of The Birds of America (1827-1838).

Visitors will also have a chance to see a specially curated pop-up exhibition of some of our other historic books on ornithology.
