Our Fashion in Film Series continues this fall with THE HUNGER a 1983 Vampire film starring David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve & Susan Sarandon.๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ง๐ถ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ฒ๐๐ at amblertheater.org/fashion๐๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐บ๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ฒ: Legendary French actress Catherine Deneuve stars alongside rock icon David Bowie as a vampire couple at a crossroads as one is immortal while the other is slowly aging away. Soon the pair lure in an attractive young scientist who falls under their spell but rejects the idea of vampirism. Oozing with style, director Tony Scottโs debut feature film is a sexy, cool horror film that has gained a cult following over the years with its bold visual aesthetic. Also starring Susan Sarandon.
๐๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ผ๐ป: Drawing influence from the Bauhaus artistic movement that originated in Germany, costume designer Milena Canoneroโs work on this film helped popularize gothic fashion to a mass audience upon its release. Costuming in THE HUNGER is a combination of new wave, โ40s noir, and the burgeoning goth subculture that would become more prevalent throughout the โ80s. A muted color palette and stark lighting compliments the charactersโ black and white clothing. David Bowieโs look is a combination of goth and new wave clothing with leather coats and round sunglasses. This look is paired with a fedora ripped straight from a film noir. Catherine Deneuveโs look was crafted by Yves Saint Laurent. She sports the quintessential โ80s silhouette of padded shoulders mixed with a daring combo of fishnets and leather. Both characters also sport either silk garments or sheer black fabrics to help accentuate the sensuality between the two vampiric lovers.

๐๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ From Marilyn's iconic white halter dress to Brando's leather jacket, it's no secret that some costumes make a lasting impression both in a viewerโs mind and in their closet. Throughout the year we will delve into cinemaโs greatest style hits and explore how clothing and fashion can be woven together to propel a filmโs story. Not only will we highlight the work of iconic designers like Edith Head and Coco Chanel, but we will also exhibit films where the costumes are given a starring role.
