On Ramp to Pre-ETS

Explorers families can learn about the Pre-Employment Transition Pre-ETS) Services available to teens.
On-Ramp to Pre-ETS is designed for young people who are transitioning into their teen years and their families. This workshop is a great opportunity for families to learn about resources and programs that are available for youth over 14.
This workshop immerses students in collaborative sessions and an “mini quest” game, providing a high-engagement simulation for the modern classrooms and workplaces.
While playing the mini quest, students practice active listening, collaborative problem-solving, and the "soft skills" of turn-taking and group consensus. The mini quest also allows for practice in self-advocacy as students to identify their character's unique strengths and communicate how those assets can overcome quest obstacles.
This gaming environment allows students to experiment with social roles and leadership styles that are directly transferable to team dynamics.
While students learn and explore, parents will be introduced to DSB’s Pre-ETS team and engage in open discussions with Explorers and Pre-ETS staff to learn more about the changes in support as their child ages. They will also attend a session to prepare the family for the technology they encounter along the way and work with their child to address methods to troubleshoot tech at home.
In the afternoon, students will use their mini-quest experience to transition from the tabletop game to a physical Orientation and Mobility (O&M) quest that starts in the DSB Seattle Office where they will simulate learning a new classroom or job site by navigating the building to find the reception desk, restrooms, and training rooms.
Then the quest moves outside, challenging students to navigate the stairs, ramps, and gravel paths leading to the nearby light rail station. By using Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) and identifying waypoints along the way, students build the spatial literacy and travel confidence necessary for post-secondary independence and a daily commute.
We hope you join us for a day of activity, learning, and fun for the whole family!
