Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Ollie “Basie-O” Elder’s musical education began on the violin at age eleven. A year or two after being on violin Ollie switched to the viola. However, it was the sound of the double bass that spoke to him. Basie-O performed and recorded with the now deceased David Ornette Cherry for 40 years. It was with Cherry where Basie-O received his education in the realm of Avant Garde Jazz. Basie-O recorded on several of Cherry’s albums including The Continual, End Of A Century and Ensemble For Improvisors Live in Los Angeles. End of a Century was awarded the 2003 ASCAP- Chamber Music America Award for adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music.
As a composer, producer, and recording engineer Basie-O co-wrote, produced and performed bass on the album Back In Love by Fleming Robinson. Basie-O can be heard on The album Thug Healer 2 by poet Taalam Acey, Another Sunday from the album “If You Were Here” by saxophonist Mekiel Reuben. And on the album “Dreams and Secrets” by trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith and Zimbabwean musician Thomas Mapfumo. Smith is recognized as a national treasure and the 2017 Trumpeter of the year.
Basie-O’s most recent project is a jazz album in dedication to his mentor David Ornette Cherry. Basie-O’s album “Blessings” is pending release in the spring of 2025. In addition to performing and recording with the aforementioned artist, Basie-O performs with many of So. California’s best R&B, Jazz, Reggae and Poet artists, such as Justo Almario, Don Littleton, Cory Jacobs, and Otis Hayes, III. As a band leader, Basie-O leads the Basie-O Group (Jazz) and The Groove Alliance (R&B). Besides running his own groups, he serves as the musical director for Ras Jimi Jaimin, a Reggae based spoken word artist.

Where is parking located?
Parking is located under the building, accessible from west of the building off of 1st St. between Bunker Hill Towers and the mini-shopping center AU LAC is in.
Once you’ve turned into the large driveway, turn left into the garage “Guest Parking and Residence Parking of The Promendade”. $12 CASH ONLY.
Additional parking is located directly across Hope St. at Disney Hall - 111 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90012. $10.
There is limited street parking in front of Au Lac, Disney Hall and The Music Center.

Au Lac is a non-alcoholic restaurant. We serve nice mock-tails in the venue. And the good news is that all ages can attend or perform there! For a pre- or post-event drink, head over to The Conrad—it's a lovely bar located just a block away, directly across from Disney Hall.
