Olive Rush and Indigenous Artists During the New Deal

Perhaps you've been awed by the murals by Awa Tsireh and Oqwa Pi at the School for Advanced Research in Santa Fe; or maybe while exploring Route 66 you've admired the colorful murals in the vestibule of the former Maisel’s Trading Post in downtown Albuquerque. If you attended or visited the Santa Fe Indian School before 2008, you may have shared meals in the dining room surrounded by vibrant murals painted by SFIS students in 1932.
But what does the modernist painter Olive Rush have to do with these works of art?
Join us as we explore the historic relationship between Olive Rush, Pueblo painters, The New Deal, and The Santa Fe Indian School -- and the present-day role of preservation, education, and conservation through the efforts of the Living New Deal.
Alana McGrattan and Lisa Longeteig are both members of the New Mexico Chapter of the Living New Deal and (former and current) teachers and librarians at the Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS). Their interest in the New Deal and Olive Rush stems from their time working at SFIS and learning about the impressive legacy of Native Artists that worked with Olive and her encouragement and promotion of their talents.
This presentation will take place in Olive Rush's historic studio, at 630 Canyon Road.
