It stretches across some of the most remote country in Australia — through the red desert, past dry salt lakes, through tiny outback towns that time largely forgot. For decades, the Old Ghan carried passengers and freight through the heart of the continent. Then it was replaced. The tracks were left behind. And the country went quiet again.
This July, we're following that old line as in this photo by Jeremy R Browne - but pulled by an original NM25 steam loco on the afghan express form Port Augusta to Quorn - then 4WD to Alice Springs.
