On February 7, the debut album by Oklou was finally released. Over the last ten years, Marylou Mayniel, who was born in 1993 and lives in Paris, has not only made a name for herself in well-informed circles under her stage name Oklou, but is now finally presenting herself in full-length album form for the first time. The record is called “choke enough”, includes 13 songs and is a spacey, emotional, atmospheric journey into the future of pop music – from the beautifully floating opener “endless” to the already well-known singles “family and friends” and “take me by the hand” with Bladee.
Oklou says of the record: “‘Choke Enough’ is a very intense album. It takes many directions, changing from tentative to unpredictable, and in doing so reflects the last few years I have spent on this planet, during which time my heart and conscience had temporarily distanced themselves from me.”
It was indeed a long and creatively fruitful journey to “choke enough”. Oklou's debut EP “Avril” with the single “Chrysalis” was released in 2014, and from today's perspective, it almost sounds like a Dreampop variant of the Charli XCX “Brat” sound. In 2015, Oklou moved to Paris, co-founded the female DJ collective TGAF (These Girls Are on Fiyah), produced, sang, acted – and repeatedly released strong singles or was a guest vocalist with musician friends.
At the end of February, Oklou is coming to Berlin for a guest performance. Now, in December, Oklou will return to Germany for two larger shows to perform “choke enough” and other songs from her oeuvre live.
