Navigating Language and Dyslexia Among Multilingual Learners
Host: Concepción Moncada-Cummings, MEd

Info: Distinguishing between language development and dyslexia remains a significant challenge when supporting multilingual learners with reading difficulties. This session explores how language proficiency, instructional history, and cross-linguistic factors influence reading profiles and identification practices. Grounded in current research and applied practice, the presentation highlights common sources of misidentification and underidentification and offers evidence-based considerations for assessment and instruction. Participants will leave with practical strategies for supporting multilingual learners with reading challenges and making informed, equitable decisions across evaluation and instruction.

🕑: 09:15 AM - 09:45 AM
Q & A with Concepción Moncada-Cummings, MEd
🕑: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
From Spreadsheet to Identification - Your Data Work for Struggling Readers
Host: Amy Thompson, PhD, C-SLDS, CALT

Info: This session addresses how to transform assessment data into meaningful identification and intervention decisions for students with dyslexia within an MTSS framework. Participants will learn to analyze patterns that differentiate dyslexia from other reading difficulties, interpret progress monitoring data, and make evidence-based decisions at critical intervention points. We'll examine characteristic profiles through case studies and practice recognizing key dyslexia indicators, including phonological processing deficits, unexpected gaps between comprehension and decoding, and inadequate intervention response. Attendees will receive practical templates for organizing tiered data and decision-making flowcharts for immediate implementation. Leave with enhanced skills to identify distinctive dyslexia profiles and support early, accurate identification leading to appropriate intervention.

Q & A with Amy Thompson, PhD, C-SLDS, CALT
🕑: 11:30 AM - 12:15 PM

Info: A light lunch and dedicated networking time have been secured in the schedule to give attendees the opportunity to exchange ideas, build connections, and engage with speakers and peers.

🕑: 12:15 PM - 01:15 PM
From Guessing to Knowing: Why Structured Literacy Matters
Host: Sheri Hight, MEd. C-SLDI

Info: Guessing can look like reading: a student who says “puppy” when the sentence calls for “dog” appears to be reading, but they’ve used context and picture cues rather than decoding the print. Learn why a shift from the three cuing method is critical; and how structured literacy benefits learners across all Tiers of learning. Objectives:1. Participants will learn the challenges students face when they are not taught to decode and encode. 2. Participants will explore the components of Structured Literacy and how they impact literacy outcomes.

🕑: 01:15 PM - 01:30 PM
Q & A with Sheri Hight, MEd. C-SLDI
🕑: 02:00 PM - 03:00 PM
Structured Literacy in the Real World
Host: Jane Hayes, MEd Dyslexia Therapy, C-SLDS, CALT-QI

Info: Educators may receive varying levels of professional development in the foundations of Structured Literacy and the science of reading. When this professional development is provided, it typically emphasizes instructional content and pedagogical approaches, yet can sometimes lack explicit guidance on how to effectively implement instruction using district-provided materials.
This presentation addresses that gap by focusing on the practical application of Structured Literacy within existing curricular resources. Participants will engage in a structured framework outlining “How to Write the Lesson Plan” to support effective implementation.
