Oikos describes an ecological home that humans and non-human creatures share. Make dens, nests, and shelters across 100 acres of wild land
About this Event

THIS IS A 3 NIGHT/2 DAY Residency - EACH BOOKING COVERS THE WHOLE PERIOD (Eventbrite settings don't allow us to show you this, but it's true!) 17th to 20th July....

The exact venue will be shared with attendees once booking has been made.

Artists poets makers dreamers musicians creatives & the curious: an invitation to craft dens, nests and alters - finding our way home to Oikos

In a cobbled together multispecies world, what does it mean to make home? How do we practice hospitality between species? What ritual play can make thresholds to other worlds? And what are our poetic responsibilities when opening doors to let the wild in?

Oikos is a weekend residency exploring den, nest and shelter making as openings to making art and kin - through traditional craft, collaborative making practices, tracking and playful ritual. In a time where our capacity to belong in house and common land face ever increasing imaginative enclosure, we experiment with a turn to making home in the wild. Making altars in the woods, we build our creative capacity for ecological imagination, material play and multispecies fellowship.

Our weekend will be spent in the 100 acre wildwood of the Mothership, in Dorset near the Birdport coast, with sauna, lakes and open countryside to explore. Homemade dinners and breakfasts are provided over the 3 nights. The evenings will include birdsong, folksong and fireside family-making with our warm group of creative co-conspirators. The weekend days will hold a programme of shared activities with plenty of time and space to explore our own paths.

On offer are 10 camping pitches, 3 indoor double bedrooms (available for couples or friends attending together) and 2 indoor single bedrooms all nestled into the idilic wilderness of the mothership grounds. This will be a beautiful creative residency where artists are invited to turn their hands to crafting altars, dens, sanctuaries and shelters in wild land. 17th - 20th July.

Your facilitators

Jay Levontine is an artist, firetender, educator, pilgrim and folksinger, raised by temperate rainforest on Dartmoor. They have led residencies and workshops on place-based imagination, foraging, clowning, interspecies music and community ritual. After years cobbling together life in caravans and stray places, planting 70000 trees by hand, Jay is studying a PhD on river rights and animist community imagination with the Civic Imaginaries Partnerships in Glasgow. Their creative work won the Sykes Prize from Cambridge University.

Poppy Large is an artist, gardener, food-systems thinker and traditional craftmaker from Croydon/living in Glasgow. She has shared her love of plants through sessions at gardens, schools and residencies on making art materials from botanical and earth pigments, weaving with natural fibres, folk herbalism and food growing. She has made pilgrimages across the British Isles having conversations about land justice and performing with a travelling band of fools in a quest to find the material practises that weave us into the living fabric of our home.
