About the film: Emperor of the North is an American adventure-drama film set during the Great Depression. It follows A-No.-1 (played by Lee Marvin), a seasoned and cunning hobo who rides the rails, and his rivalry with Shack (Ernest Borgnine), a ruthless railroad conductor determined to keep hobos off the trains. When a young drifter, Cigaret (Keith Carradine), joins A-No.-1 on a daring journey aboard the “emperor” freight train, the trio engages in a tense, high-stakes battle of wits, endurance, and survival across the harsh, unforgiving railroads of 1930s America. The film explores themes of freedom, resilience, and the clash between authority and the outcasts of society.
