About this Event

“Oh... is that what they really think?” Better products through UX research

How charities can leverage UX research to discover, build and operate better products and services. After this session you will have an overview of established and emerging research methods and how you can use them most effectively and affordably. Different charities will present real life case studies, sharing insights in user behaviour and learnings on how to embed research in organisations.

(and of course there’s time for a drink and meeting peers!).

The Listening Lab

The Listening Lab is the new UX research lab and team that Diabetes UK created to learn more about people living with diabetes and the tech they use – from websites and apps to testing devices and smart products. The comfortable rooms put participants at ease to talk openly about personal experiences and provides an inspiring space for teams and stakeholders to observe research and workshop solutions.

Now other researchers, charities and companies can hire the lab for their own 1:1 user interviews, focus groups and usability testing too. Or let our researchers take care of planning, participant recruitment, execution and analysis. Some recent examples: prototype testing for a health tech startup, medical device testing, usability testing of an online charity shop, and focus groups around stigma.

We have a 25% discount on lab hire for charity projects, on top of our already very affordable rates. Plus all proceeds support the work of Diabetes UK.

Meet the speakers

(Diabetes UK)

Gary-Jay is the UX lead for Digital Education at Diabetes UK. For the last two years he has led on the redesign of Learning Zone, to be launched later 2024, and has supported Know Your Risk product owner Becki Galyer with the redesign of Know Your Risk starting with user testing of the current Know Your Risk product in 2023.

(Whizz Kidz)

Tony is the senior website and digital marketing manager at Whizz Kidz, the UK's leading charity for young wheelchair users. Here he implemented a new digital marketing strategy and oversaw the launch of a new website. Prior to Whizz Kidz, Tony led a digital marketing team at FTSE250 media company before joining a digital product development and user experience agency. He has a sausage dog called Burt who is the boss of the household and if lost, you'll probably find Tony at Bromley FC.

(Help for Heroes)

Duncan looks after the Help for Heroes website. With over 15 years’ worth of experience, he’s worked on a handful of new website build projects for charities and in 2021, he project managed the successful new Help for Heroes website. Before joining the military health charity, he won a handful of awards for WWF-UK’s blog content. He’s also been a professional musician. When he’s not implementing web improvements for audiences (or even singing to them), you can find him volunteering as a conservationist and taking wildlife photos….or even watching Star Wars.

(Listening Lab/Diabetes UK)

Martijn runs the Listening Lab at Diabetes UK. As a UX consultant with 20+ years of experience, he’s an expert on user research methods and human behaviour online. Earlier, he set up the strategy team at TPXimpact (now Manifesto) and provided digital strategy to organisations like Southbank Centre and British Library in the UK, and Aegon and Doctors without Borders in the Netherlands.
