Oh, Cut it Out! Collage Class with Gina Louthian-Stanley

Join us for a fun, hands-on in-person collage class led by the super creative Gina Louthian-Stanley. Get ready to cut, paste, and craft your way to beautiful, one-of-a-kind artworks. Perfect for all skill levels—come express yourself, meet fellow art lovers, and let your imagination run wild!

"Collage” comes from the French word, meaning to glue or stick together.

Collage is, in fact, a technique utilized in the art world to create through the process of assembling different forms together to imagine something completely new.

When we think of collage, we usually think of cutting and gluing paper. However, collage is only limited by your imagination and how well your glue holds. Collage can be created by utilizing a variety of mixed mediums along with – photographs, magazine and newspaper clippings, sheet music, book pages, product and packaging labels, just to name a few.

The term Papier Colle was coined by both George Barque and Pablo Picasso in the beginning of the 20th Century, when collage became a distinct part of modern art. Although Braque and Picasso made collage famous and mainstream, these two well-known Parisian artists were not the first to create within this art form.

Gina will furnish the pre-cut substrates, pastes, cutting mats and tools, as well as a plethora of ephemera and imagery.

You need to bring:

• Clean cotton rags or a roll of soft paper towels

• Wet Ones (or other brand) wipes

• Apron (You will get messy.)

• Gloves, If desired

• Any paper, magazines, or ephemera you may desire to use to make your work more personal.

• Scissors / exacto-knife

Optional but recommended:

• Gloves or protective cream for hands

• Notebook or sketchbook for taking notes and keeping ideas

• 4” or 6” soft rubber brayer

Gina Louthian-Stanley is a multi-media artist, writer, and workshop instructor based in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Working primarily with monotype printmaking, encaustic, and cold wax, her layered, luminous works explore texture, emotion, and the natural world—often beginning without a preconceived image and evolving intuitively.

Gina holds a B.A. from Hollins University and an M.A. from Radford University. She has received numerous regional, national, and international honors, including a 2025 nomination for the Perry Kendig Award. An internationally recognized instructor, she has served as a Master Instructor for Painting With Fire in Ireland and has been featured in major publications including Cold Wax Techniques & Conversations and Encaustic Arts Magazine.

Her work is held in permanent collections and can be seen locally at Market Gallery and other galleries throughout the region.
