Calling all Backyard Basil Growers! 🌱It's the first Grow Jackson
Oh Boy, BASIL! Festival - Redux!
It's inspired by the original warm and delightful Oh Boy, Basil! Festivals, held in the 1980's, at Fox Hill Farm in Parma, MI, USA - hugely attended community days hosted by renowned herbalist and author Marilyn Hampstead!
From seed to sauce - grow it, taste it, take it home! Learn from farmers and growers - and from Marilyn herself! - how their basil came to be; hear talk about growing and preserving herbs; and tell about your experiences in growing basil in your yard, balcony, windowsill or wherever you harvest!
Just bring your home grown basil and/or plant(s) to the Oh Boy, BASIL! Festival Redux on July 25, 2026 and share your knowledge with all who come. Be serious, be nonchalant, be funny, have fun!
1. There are three categories, select one, two or three - no limits:
- Seed grown basil
- Purchased plant grown basil
- Fresh cut basil grown in your own piece of Mother Earth
2. There are four types of basil, select one or many, your choice:
- Sweet/Genovese basil
- Purple basil
- Lemon or lime basil
- Spicy globe basil
Suggested local seed sources:
Get free spicy globe basil seeds Saturday, May 2, at our inaugural market (and you can actually plant them right on site with us!)
- Sweet, purple, lemon- Blain's Livingston Seeds, Ferry-Morse seeds at Walmart, Lowe's and many other retailers
- Spicy globe basil seeds are available at Friday and Saturday farmers markets starting May 1 & 2 - just ask your market manager!
Suggested local basil plant sources:
- Right at the farmers market! Check with local farmers for seedlings
- Beck's, Hobbit House, Jolly Green Junction
- Bonnie brand plants at Lowe's Meijer, Walmart, Home Depot, etc.
- Produce departments have live, potted basil plants, too. Meijer and Walmart, maybe other stores.
(This basil event is not really competitive, but there will be awards!)
And of course, some basil based food specialties will be available… caprese skewers, basil lemonade (and maybe even some basil pizza) - pesto making, recipes, and hands-on learning opportunities for the kiddos!
