Our Book for May is “The Poppy War” by R.F Kuang in honor of Asian American Heritage Month. It is the first in a trilogy, inspired by 20th-century Chinese history, particularly the Second Sino-Japanese War. It follows war orphan Rin as she aces a military academy entrance exam, discovers powerful shamanistic abilities, and must confront a devastating war with the Federation of Mugen, fearing the cost to her humanity. The series, which includes The Dragon Republic and The Burning God, is known for its dark themes, complex characters, and blend of military fantasy with historical and mythological elements.
