Join us Saturday, October 19th at 1:30 p.m. for an offsite author event hosted by Finnish American Home Association (FAHA) in Sonoma, featuring Hanna Pylväinen, author of The End of Drum-Time. This book is an epic love story, set in a remote Scandinavian village in 1851. In it, a Lutheran minister tries to convert native Sámi reindeer herders guarding a diminishing herd. A chance meeting between the minister’s daughter and a herder grows into a relationship as she joins them on their annual migration north to the sea. Contemporary readers will appreciate the story for themes that transcend place and time, while also finding the setting immersive and well researched. Hanna Pylväinen is the author of the novels We Sinners, which received the Whiting Award and the Balcones Fiction Prize, and The End of Drum-Time, a finalist for the 2023 National Book Award in fiction, both from Henry Holt & Co. She graduated summa cum laude from Mount Holyoke College and received her MFA from the University of Michigan, where she was also a Zell Fellow. Her work has appeared in Harper’s, The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, the Chicago Tribune, and The Wall Street Journal; she is the recipient of residencies at MacDowell, Yaddo, and the Lásságámmi Foundation, as well as fellowships from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the American-Scandinavian Foundation, two fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, a Princeton Arts Fellowship at Princeton University, and a Cullman Fellowship at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Writers and Scholars at the New York Public Library. She has taught at the University of Michigan, Princeton University, and Virginia Commonwealth University; currently, she teaches at the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers and is the Finlandia Foundation 2024 Lecturer of the Year. She lives in Philadelphia.
FAHA (Finnish American Home Association) is located at 197 West Verano Avenue, Sonoma, between Hwy 12 and Arnold Drive, across from Maxwell Park. After entering the campus off Verano Avenue, immediately turn left onto Old Maple Avenue and then take the first driveway on the right (approx. 200ft) to the FAHA Heritage Center parking lot. The entrance is up the stairs from the driveway. An accessible ramp is located at the very back of the parking lot, which leads to the Heritage Hall patio.
