A fallen former cop recruits a hard-bitten, bigoted ex-con (Robert Ryan) and a debt-ridden nightclub singer (Harry Belafonte) to pull off a bank job. But as the animosity between them boils over, the entire plan threatens to implode.
Generally credited as the last of the classic American noir cycle, this is also one of the canon’s sole entries to feature a Black protagonist. Assured direction from Robert Wise (WEST SIDE STORY, THE SOUND OF MUSIC) and a score by John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet make this a must-see.
