An evening of character driven works inhabited by Kathryn Ricketts (Saskatchewan) and Lana Morton (Ottawa). A sometimes humorous, fully physical look at the “shoulds” in our lives.

Oh what a world

Rufus is a retired clown in a 3 pieces suit calling attention to the natality in dissonance and error. Rufus reminds us not only of the value but the necessity of failure and risk taking and urges us to see the world for what it is and to peel away the “shoulds” in our lives.

Hal and the Hoarder

Hal sports a beige fortrel jacket embellished with brown braid and boasting a hand embroidered emblem claiming him as a Regina exhibition dignitary this is accompanied with a hat blazoned with a bronze bull. He delivers a range of eulogies in the form of an auctioneer; “going once, going twice, gone!” Hal disrupts the expected content from an auctioneer and instead creates a tender attention and tension in tribute to lives lived. Hal finds the heart in Eulogies that journey from this quantitative summary to what really matters about the person remembered.

Pages from Harlequin Romance novels alternated with blank white paper and housed in old floppy discs is my invitation to the undiscovered poet. I ask participants to circle the words that pop out from the romantic text and transfer them in the form of a spontaneous poem. Lyn Vasey, poet and composer, played with this invitation which resulted in 26 poetic renderings with sound and image. This performance presents 5 of my response improvisations.

Autres Fréquences reflects on an woman who is in an axis turn; her body and mind seek to find her vital essence. She hears the ancestral call of the wild woman.

Kathryn Rickette has been working for the past 45 years in the field of dance, theatre and visual arts, performing and teaching throughout Europe, South America, Africa, Australia and Canada. Her work in studios, galleries, theatres and environmental sites focuses on social /political issues with dance, theatre, text and visual art as the languages. Her Doctoral research furthered this into areas of literacy, embodiment and cultural studies with a method she has coined Embodied Poetic Narrative. She is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education in the University of Regina as the chair of the Dance area. She runs The Listening Lab, a visual and performing arts ‘incubator’ and presents exhibitions and performances in her loft in the John Deere Tractor Building. Since her arrival in Regina, 2014, she has been active on community boards and actively taught and created through several studios in the city. Her, research , teaching and service continues to thrive within dance/theatre performative scholarship and she continues to be active in her collaborations globally with her multi-media and interdisciplinary performances.

Lana Morton is the Associate director and Production manager of Ottawa Dance Directive. She is the founder of SERIES DANCE 10, a presentation series that now has more than 51 productions in Ottawa. With a bachelor's degree in contemporary dance from the Université du Québec à Montréal, she has been working the Ottawa-Gatineau dance community since 1995 as a performer, choreographer, artistic collaborator, teacher and producer.

Oh what a world (Drôle de monde)

Clown à la retraite vêtu d’un costume trois-pièces, Rufus attire l’attention sur la natalité au milieu des fausses notes et des gaffes. Il nous rappelle la valeur et la nécessité des échecs et de la prise de risques tout en nous incitant à voir le monde tel qu’il est, sans plus penser aux obligations dans nos vies.

Hal and the Hoarder (Hal et le ramasseux)

Hal porte une veste beige ornée de galons bruns et d’un emblème brodé à la main, ainsi qu’un chapeau orné d’un taureau en bronze. Cet accoutrement est celui d’un dignitaire de l’exposition de Regina. Il prononce une série d’éloges funèbres à la manière d’un commissaire-priseur : « Une fois, deux fois, parti ! » Contrevenant à l'attitude attendue d’un encanteur, Hal en vient à rendre un hommage attentionné, tendre et passionné aux existences vécues. Dans les éloges funèbres, il plonge au cœur du sujet en s’éloignant du quantitatif pour aller vers l’essentiel, c’est-à-dire le souvenir de la personne décédée.

J’aime interpeler les poètes qui s’ignorent en leur fournissant des pages de romans Harlequin qui alternent avec des feuilles de papier vierges sur de vieilles disquettes. Je leur demande d’encercler les mots qui leur sautent aux yeux dans le texte romantique afin de les faire ressortir dans un poème spontané. Lyn Vasey, poète et compositrice, a accepté l’invitation. Elle a créé 26 nouvelles interprétations par le son et l’image. Dans cette performance, je vous offre cinq de mes réponses improvisées.

Autres Fréquences est une réflexion sur une femme qui se trouve dans un axe de rotation. Son corps et son esprit cherchent à retrouver leur essence vitale. Elle entend l’appel ancestral de la femme sauvage.

Kathryn Ricketts travaille depuis 45 ans dans plusieurs domaines artistiques. Elle s’est produite et a enseigné partout en Europe, en Amérique du Sud, en Afrique, en Australie et au Canada. Avec son travail dans les studios, les galeries, les théâtres et les sites environnementaux, elle a exploré des questions sociales et politiques avec, comme moyens d’expression, la danse, le théâtre, le texte et l’art visuel. Grâce à sa recherche doctorale, elle a exploré davantage cette réflexion en lien avec l’alphabétisation, la personnification et les études culturelles en créant une méthode qu’elle a nommée Embodied Poetic Narrative (narration poétique incarnée). Professeure associée à la faculté d’éducation de l’Université de Regina, elle en dirige aussi le département de danse. Elle mène The Listening Lab, un lieu d’incubation pour les arts visuels et de la scène. Elle présente des expositions et des performances dans son loft situé dans le John Deere Tractor Building. Depuis son arrivée à Regina en 2014, elle a siégé à des conseils communautaires en plus d’enseigner et de créer dans plusieurs studios de la ville. Ses recherches, son enseignement et ses services artistiques continuent de s’épanouir grâce à des bourses en danse et théâtre. Dans le cadre de ses performances, elle poursuit activement des collaborations multimédias et interdisciplinaires à l’échelle internationale.

Lana Morton est directrice associée et directrice de production du Centre de danse contemporaine (ODD) ; elle a fondé SÉRIE DANSE 10, une programmation qui a produit à ce jour plus de 51 présentations à Ottawa.

Titulaire d’un baccalauréat en danse contemporaine de l’Université du Québec à Montréal, elle œuvre au sein du milieu de la danse d’Ottawa-Gatineau depuis 1995 en tant qu’interprète, chorégraphe, collaboratrice artistique, enseignante et productrice.
