Wednesday October 1st Women of Words welcome back friend and mentor the extremely talented poet Kirsten Luckins to Hull Central Library. Kirsten arrives with her latest collection in tow called Offworld (The Braag.) In her repeated visits to Women of Words as guest author, Kirsten has never failed to delight audiences with her knowledge, imagination, wit and wordplay.
Kirsten Luckins is a Hartlepool-based poet and founding director of the Tees Women Poets. She has been a spoken word producer for 15 years, working regionally and nationally for Apples and Snakes and the Rebecca Swift Foundation. Her work has been published widely in magazines such as Magma, Under the Radar, and Butcher's Dog. Her third collection Passerine (Bad Betty, 2021) was longlisted for the Laurel Prize for Eco-Poetry, and she is currently artist-in-residence at Tees Valley Wildlife Trust. Her practice is inspired by ecopoetics, ekphrasis, and experimentation generally - she will be reading from her most recent pamphlet, Offworld (The Braag, 2025), which is a planet-hopping buddy-movie through a disintegrating galactic empire...
Join us from 2pm in the James Reckitt Reading Room upstairs – lift access available – We run the open mic at our monthly event each slot – strictly five minutes, please time your pieces at home beforehand – the list will open about half past one. This time constraint is vital to encourage different voices and subject matters, thus creating a varied listening experience for the audience. And there will be a break, where we will pass around the hat for donations. The suggested donation is two pounds per person. If you can’t donate we understand, it is not mandatory.
Women of Words is an event series and platform for women writers, set up in 2016 as a response to what was then a male dominated scene. The stage is reserved for women, but men are and have always been, welcome in the audience.
