It is that time of year again. The season is changing, Kronprinz Ludwig is hooking up with Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen and it is time to roll out those cave aged lagers. Oktoberfest is back at Sacch! This year we are partying like it is 1810 for the whole month of Oktober! Yea we know it is meant to be the last week of September to the first Sunday in October, but we are dumb. And we like beer.
Kicking off from the first of October, we will be showcasing the world of lagers. Yes that is correct, there is more to lagers than XXXX Gold, VB and Great Northern. Week one we will bring you Vienna in all its glory. Not so much Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, and Strauss more so the Vienna Lager. Although we may drop a few sweet classic orchestral beats. Week two, we have nabbed a little Australian debut with beers from Kloster Andechs Monastery Brewery. Similar to the Trappist Monasteries of Belgium, the monks of Andechs produce some of the finest beer in Germany. Week three we dive into some of the less known lager styles. Think of the smokey goodness of rauchbiers, malty schwarzbier, boozy bocks and altbiers . To round out our October of Oktoberfest, we’ll get our Kolsch on. And yes we will be pulling out the silly round Kolsch tray so you can buy a round for the whole family.
WEEK ONE
Nothing like a collab to kick off a fun filled month of crispy lager bois. Our good mates at Archer Brewing have crafted us up a lovely Vienna Lager. One of the world’s greatest and most-versatile beers, the Vienna lager may not be as well known as pilsner and other pale lagers, but it still deserves to have a spot in your beer collection. A well-rounded, flavourful lager style that sits right in the middle of the beer flavour spectrum: not light and crisp, like a light lager, but not heavy and dessert-like, either. Thanks to a recipe based around Vienna malt, Vienna lager often has sweet toffee, nutty and lightly toasted bread flavours. Prost! Joining Archer will be Vienna Lagers from Hiker, Hodfellows and Future Magic. Supporting our Vienna love-in, we’ll also have a collection of Festbiers pouring. From Germany we have Weltenburger and Weihenstephaner and Andechs. And representing Australia, we have Festbiers from Slow Lane, Hodfellows and King River.
WEEK TWO
For the second week of October, we have a real treat. For the first time in Australia (that’s what we’ve been told anyway), we’ll be pouring beers from Andechs Monastery Brewery. The monks of Andechs produce some of the finest beers in Germany. Brewed exclusively in the Andechs using the traditional multiple mashing process, the Benedictines’ monks have served as ambassadors of Andechs hospitality for more than 550 years. The Andechs Monastery finances their many activities, such as help for the homeless in Munich, with the brewery – and no church tax funds. On tap we will have Helles, Spezial Helles, Bergbock Helles, Witbier Originale, Export Dunkel, Doppel Dunkel.
WEEK THREE
Crossing into the third week we embrace the lesser consumed lager styles. Get yourself down the lane to enjoy some smoked lagers, bocks, schwarzbiers and altbiers. These alt lagers have been brewed for Oktoberfest celebration by breweries all over Oz. We’ll be tapping specialty brews from Sea Legs, Hodfellows, Holgate, King River and Hope Estate.
WEEK FOUR
To round out October, we are diving into the King of Cologne, the mighty Kolsch. A pale, highly attenuated, hoppy, bright (i.e. filtered and not cloudy) top-fermenting beer. A true weirdo of a beer. Is it a lager (technically, yes) or is it an ale? Kölsch is warm fermented with top-fermenting yeast like an ale, then conditioned at cold temperatures like a lager. To ratify the Kölsch Konvention (it’s really a thing) we will be pouring Früh Kolsch all week into wee little glasses and putting them on a round tray. We will also have some non-Kölsch Konvention Kölsches from Madocke, King Valley and Hope.
