About Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area
Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area (ONA) is a unique coastal preserve where maritime hammock, mangrove, and upland habitats provide important stopover and year-round habitat for birds along Florida's Atlantic coast. Since becoming an official eBird hotspot in 2019, birders have documented an ever-growing list of species, leading to the site's inclusion on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail in 2023.
Following an extensive habitat restoration project, the trails are reopening with newly planted native vegetation ready to welcome both birds and birders. October Big Day offers an exciting opportunity to help document the site's comeback and contribute to its growing birding legacy.
About the Event
October Big Day is a worldwide celebration of birding and citizen science. Participants will explore the trails, recording every bird seen or heard to help build a snapshot of migration across the globe.
This event is especially meaningful as we celebrate the reopening of restored trails and begin documenting how birds return to the revitalized landscape. Every checklist submitted helps tell the story of the habitat's recovery and provides valuable data for future conservation efforts.
Birders of all experience levels are welcome. Whether you're a seasoned expert or just getting started, your observations make a difference. Experienced birders are especially encouraged to participate and help expand the site's species list while mentoring newer birders along the way.
The event also coincides with the National Public Lands Day celebration, and participants are invited to enjoy the day's festivities after the bird count.

- Meeting location: Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum lot
- Address: 500 Captain Armours Way, Jupiter 33469.
- Date: Saturday, October 10
- Check-In Time: 7:45AM (please arrive at least 5 minutes before designated start time at 8AM)
- Trail Conditions: Newly reopened natural trails with varied terrain. Closed-toe shoes are recommended. No paved trails.
- Restrooms: Available on site.

If you register but are unable to attend, please cancel your reservation so another participant may join.
Special Event Perks
Participants will receive a National Public Lands Day T-shirt while supplies last. Please register so we can estimate attendance.
The site manager, Peter De Witt, will give a brief overview of the site, the construction project and the data collection project.
All registered birders are also invited to climb the historic Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse at the conclusion of the walk.

Participants are encouraged to submit their observations through eBird.
A shared eBird checklist will be available for those birding with the group.

Your Guide
Kar DeGeiso has been birding for 40 years. An animal/plant science major originally from Delaware, Kar has been involved as a volunteer in research projects involving red knots and saw-whet owls, and at Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research in Delaware, where she cared for baby birds. As a past teacher and instructor, Kar enjoys leading trips for Audubon Everglades where she frequently has the opportunity to help new birders discover the joy of birding.
