For 150 years, the House of Refuge at Gilbert’s Bar has stood as a witness to the history of Florida’s Treasure Coast. Now, we’re bringing some of that history to life through the Oceanside Lecture Series—an exciting lineup of talks exploring the people, events, legends, and stories that shaped our coast.
From shipwrecks and pirates to Prohibition, rum runners, and the fascinating world beneath our shoreline, there’s something here for every history lover, curious local, and Florida enthusiast.

The Story Behind the House of Refuge Museum

Join Marie Kennedy as she shares the remarkable story of how the House of Refuge was saved from demolition and became the treasured museum we know today.
In the 1950s, the historic House of Refuge faced an uncertain future. Thanks to the vision, determination, and dedication of the Soroptimist International of Stuart, this beloved landmark was saved and established as a museum. The Soroptimists also played an instrumental role in the formation of the Martin County Historical Society, helping ensure that the House and its extraordinary history would be preserved for generations to come.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTER, MARIE KENNEDY:
Born and raised in New Jersey, Marie retired and moved to Stuart, Florida in 2018. As an active member of Soroptimist in NJ since 1990, one of the first things she did was find the local Soroptimist club.
Currently, Marie is a member of the Soroptimist Club of Stuart. She is also a docent at the Elliott Museum and the House of Refuge. Marie discovered that the Soroptimist club of Stuart had been instrumental in saving the House of Refuge and in starting the Historical Society of Martin County. In 2021, the club members were invited to the Elliott to see a special exhibit about the club that was celebrating this accomplishment. She began volunteering at the Museum shortly after.
