Join us for a guided walking tour of Newport Bay Trash Wheel Interceptor. The City of Newport Beach has constructed a sustainably-powered system that will collect a significant amount of trash from upstream sources before it enters the bay and ocean. The $5 million floating Trash Interceptor is expected to reduce the amount of trash and debris reaching the Upper Newport Bay by 80 percent (estimated between 100 to 500 tons a year). The project supplements other efforts already in place, including trash booms, storm drain collection systems, and floating skimmers, to prevent trash from entering the sensitive aquatic environment of the Upper Bay preserve.

We will park and meet at Bonita Creek Park Community Center at 11 am and take a short (0.5 mile) walk to the trash interceptor. The tour will start at 11:30 am. Each attendee will receive a box lunch at the end of the tour to network back at the park.

Time: Meet @ 11:00 am; Tour starts @ 11:30 am; lunch and net working @ 12:30 pm

Cost: $55 at the door, $45 advanced payment by mail or credit card, $50 registered but pay at the door, Students $20 at the door with school ID
