About this Event

About This Training

What happens when a pregnant patient walks through the emergency department door and there is no OB on call, no labor and delivery unit down the hall, and the nearest hospital is an hour away? For rural nurses and EMS providers, that is not a hypothetical — it is Tuesday.

The Obstetrical Transitions of Care course was built for exactly those moments. This is a one-day, hands-on simulation training that puts you inside realistic obstetric emergency scenarios, alongside your nursing and EMS colleagues, in the actual environment where you work. No lecture hall in a city far from home. No cost. Just expert training, delivered directly to your community.

What to Expect

Your training day is structured as a morning of focused didactic instruction followed by an afternoon of immersive, team-based simulation. You will spend the morning building clinical knowledge across the most critical obstetric emergencies your team encounters, then spend the afternoon putting that knowledge to work in high-fidelity scenarios that mirror the real thing.

Who Should Attend

This training is open to providers at rural Florida hospitals without a dedicated labor and delivery unit and the EMS agencies serving those communities. This session is limited to 20 participants: 10 seats for Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Emergency Department staff, and 10 seats for EMS providers (EMTs and Paramedics).

Spots fill quickly. Register now to secure your place.

All registered participants are expected to attend the full training day. Due to the interconnected nature of the sessions and simulation activities, partial attendance is not recommended and may affect CE credit eligibility.

Morning — Didactic Sessions

  • Obstetrical triage and initial assessment
  • Supporting normal delivery in the field and emergency department
  • Identification and management of obstetric hemorrhage
  • Recognition and response to hypertensive disorders in pregnancy
  • Florida's Telehealth Maternity Care Program and referral pathways

Afternoon — Simulation

This is where the day comes alive. Working in small interprofessional groups, you will move through high-fidelity simulation scenarios using obstetric manikins in your actual clinical environment. Each scenario follows a patient from EMS field response through emergency department delivery and into postpartum complications — so you experience the full arc of an obstetric emergency, not just isolated tasks. Structured debriefing after each scenario gives your team the space to reflect, communicate, and sharpen the instincts that make a difference when seconds matter.

What You Will Walk Away With

By the end of the day, you will be able to:

  • Recognize perinatal emergencies in both pre-hospital and in-hospital settings
  • Demonstrate interprofessional care for managing obstetric emergencies
  • Explain available telehealth resources and the referral process within your community

All participants receive Continuing Education (CE) credits upon completion.

About the Program

The Obstetrical Transitions of Care initiative is developed and delivered by USF Health's Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) in collaboration with the Florida Perinatal Quality Collaborative (FPQC) and the Florida Center for Emergency Medical Services (FL-CEMS), with support from the Florida Department of Health.
