Join Oakland Rotary for a timely and thought-provoking presentation by Harold Kwalwasser on the importance of the Rule of Law and judicial independence in preserving democratic institutions and protecting individual rights.
In this nonpartisan discussion, Harold will explore why the Rule of Law is fundamental to a free society and invite attendees to consider real-world examples of governmental abuse and the protections afforded by an independent judiciary. Through these examples, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how legal institutions safeguard individual rights and democratic principles.
The presentation will also encourage citizens to engage in constructive civic participation and to communicate the importance of preserving these foundational institutions within their communities.
Speaker Bio
Harold Kwalwasser is a graduate of Yale Law School and served as an Editor of the Yale Law Journal.
He practiced law in Los Angeles for 16 years, primarily in antitrust law, before serving as Deputy General Counsel and Legal Counsel for the U.S. Department of Defense. He later served as General Counsel for the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Today, Harold is one of the California Coordinators for Lawyers Defending American Democracy, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to defending the Rule of Law, preserving judicial independence, and promoting accountability when legal institutions are abused.
