About this Event
You are cordially invited to attend The 23rd Oakland International Film Festival on September 13th at Northeastern University(formally Mill’s College) at 2:30 p.m., for a special film screening and discussion centered around preventing violence in Oakland and the world around.
We will showcase two films. The short film : “Grieving Brothers” directed by Jere’Miah MCGhee folllowed by the Award-Winning feature documentary “Crime After Crime” directed by Yoav Potash. After the film screening’s, we will host a question and answer/ panel session with the filmmakers and community leaders here in the City of Oakland working to end violence in Oakland.

A story about two brothers coping with the loss of a loved one. Their own grief has forced them to turn on each other in a moment of need.
2. Crime After Crime (93 minutes)
The story of the battle to free Debbie Peagler, an incarcerated survivor of brutal domestic violence. Over 20 years in Pr*son cannot crush the spirit of this determined African-American woman, despite the injustices she has experienced, first at the hands of a duplicitous boyfriend who beat her and forced her into prostitution, and later by prosecutors who cornered her into a life behind bars for her connection to the M**der of her abuser. Her story takes an unexpected turn two decades later when a pair of rookie land-use attorneys cut their teeth on her case -- and attract global attention to the troubled intersection.
