About this Event
I'm Andrew Alden, longtime geology blogger and author of Deep Oakland: How Geology Shaped a City. Geology isn't limited to rocks and mountains, it's under our feet everywhere. In Oakland's downtown, I'll show you the unusual ground, created during the ice ages, that drew Oakland's founders here in 1850. We'll also see how the city and this ground have affected each other from then until today.
Limited to 25 people. We will meet at the top of Snow Park at 19th and Harrison Streets, just a couple blocks from the 19th Street BART station. The tour will pass notable buildings, infrastructure, historical sites, natural features and fashions in stone from Oakland's history. Please be ready for a brisk walking pace on paved surfaces.
