On Monday, May 18th, at 5PM, join the Old Saybrook Land Trust Outdoor Adventure Kids (OAK) at Harvey's Beach in Old Saybrook for Horseshoe Crab tagging. Each year, regular folks join with scientists to track and study the horseshoe crab population. You will be helping us find, tag, measure, and record the condition of horseshoe crabs. In preparation, we will have a casting of ahorseshoe crab fossil from 200 million years ago, show how to tell a male from a female, and explain why horseshoe crabs are important to humans. We will also look at other creatures we find!
This event is fun for all ages, and we will ask participants to help with the measuring and data recording. To fully enjoy the event, participants will be in the low tide water. If there are thunderstorms, we will post a rain date on our socials.
High School or College Students who interested in learning how to tag horseshoe crabs, please text us at 203.747.1932 with your name, grade, and school, at least 2 weeks prior to the event so we can learn of your interest, availability and arrange training. This may also count towards volunteer hours.
