NZCFS Wellington Branch Monthly Meeting June 2026: Overview of National Conference and AGM
Stephen’s grandparents, the Tse family, moved to Aotearoa from Poon Fah 番禺, Canton, China in 1927. There were already two small children in the family and one more on the way. Stephen’s mother, their fourth child, was born in New Zealand. They arrived in Wellington in the 1930s before settling in Newtown in the early 1950s. Their family home was on Constable Street, on the site where the library extension now stands and the family ran what is known today as Jimmy’s Fruit Shop. Stephen’s father, Brian King, was well known within the Chinese community, working as a produce market auctioneer for over 40 years. Stephen and his wife, Sarah, now live on Tasman Street and have two married adult children.
Stephen will be talking at our monthly meeting of his connection to places—specifically, Newtown and Mt Cook—and his family’s stories as early Chinese migrants to New Zealand.
