To kick off our new film season, we're staying by the sea a little longer and starting this series with Agnès Varda's "The Beaches of Agnès", her wandering self-portrait built from a lifetime of shorelines.

Returning to the beaches that have been part of her life, Agnès Varda invents a kind of self-portrait-documentary. She stages herself among excerpts of her films, images and reportages in a journey through her own life, career, and artistic philosophy. From the North Sea beaches of Belgium where she spent her childhood, to the Mediterranean fishing village where she shot her first film and the boardwalks of Los Angeles where she lived with her husband Jacques Demy, Varda looks back on a life full of both creation and loss, joy and hardship. The Beaches of Agnès is a playful record of a life lived fully and passionately in the name of cinema.
Director’s bio: A founder of the French New Wave who became an international arthouse icon, Agnès Varda was a fiercely independent, restlessly curious visionary whose work was at once personal and passionately committed to the world around her. In an abundant career in which she never stopped expanding the notion of what a movie can be, Varda forged a unique cinematic vocabulary that frequently blurs the boundaries between narrative and documentary, and entwines loving portraits of her friends, her family, and her own inner world with a social consciousness that was closely attuned to the 1960s counterculture, women’s liberation movement, the plight of the poor and socially marginalized, and the ecology of our planet.
